NCN 68 Ashbourne to Etwall – workday & ride

On Tuesday 30th June starting at 10 am, the three Ashbourne rangers will be sorting out some specific signage problems where the route goes off-road at Highfield Road; post code: DE6 1DX and Grid Ref: SK176458 At 11 am or when the above work is completed, (whichever is the sooner), we will follow the 68 south towards its junction with NCN 54 near Etwall. As we ride we will be checking signs along the way, especially to make sure they are not obscured by vegetation. Please comment below this post if you are likely to join either the initial work or the subsequent ride (or want more information).

  1. The workday on Tuesday went well – 100% turnout from Ashbourne Sustrans Rangers.
We fixed a lot of signs around the Highfield Road area, so that is much improved. I’ll have to go there in the car soon to finish off – power drill & steps needed for a couple of things.
Then we rode south on 68 looking for signs obscured by vegetation; the worst are the low heavy wooden posts because they are set back in the hedges. We cleared one before Wyaston and another which was invisible between Wyaston and Rodsley.
I then went straight down to Ashe Hall where I picnicked under one of their giant redwoods. I then started from the 68/54 junction and worked back to Longford. All now visible but some places will soon grow over and need re-doing. Also there is one hedge on Long Lane which is too dangerous to work on – blind bend, no verge and fast traffic. Unfortunately it signs a crucial R turn.
