This You-tube video was a revelation to
me. Like a lot of people, I would guess, I imagined that Holland had had cycle paths since Roman times! Cycling
was always part of the Dutch culture; it's in their genes! Not so. Click here to see a potted history of how the current situation came about. If the political will
were present in this country, could Britain
emulate Holland ’s
success?
The blog of the Sustrans Volunteer Rangers in the White Peak. Our area contains traffic-free cycling and walking trails, including the High Peak Trail, the Tissington Trail, the Manifold Track and the Monsal Trail, as well as various on-road cycle routes belonging to the National Cycle Network, in particular Ashbourne to Etwall. We ride these routes regularly, notifying Peak Park or Derbyshire and Staffordshire county councils of any problems. We also sign the trails which are parts of the NCN.
Thanks for your comments, Keith. I'm optimistic that more money will become available from a variety of sources as awareness of cycling and participation in it gather momentum, but I share your sentiments about the media, and not just concerning cycling! I've had a look at your blog posts on the Watermead project and I've created a link here to your blog. I've been on the two legs of NCR6 into Leicester in the past (Watermeads, and the other one that runs alongside the Great Central Railway line). The Watermeads route was already a pretty one but I look forward to seeing the new Connect2 link, now that's it completed. Maybe our group could have a ride down that way later this year? Likewise, you'd be very welcome up here!
